The demon ‘Narkasur’ was killed by lord Vishnu in his eighth incarnation or avatar as lord Krishna. The demon narkasur was the cruel king of pragjyotishpura near Aasam. He had great power. But because of his cruelity and proudness in his nature, often he became dangerous to his people and even to the goods. He even defeated lord indra and took away the precious earrings of Aditi, the mother goddess. He also imprisoned sixteen thousand of gods and saints.
The narkasur story of Diwali goes like this that he was believed to be a demon of dirt. The demon narkasur was a big tall person who was often good but sometimes he behaved very badly. He used to kidnap young women for his sexual requirements.
The other gods request lord Krishna for help. Lord Krishna accept their request. He took satyabhama, his wife in the battle field andafter a long battle he killed the demon narkasur. Lord Krishna freed the daughters of gods and recovered the earrings of mother aditi. First lord Krishna had to fight with a five headed monster who gaurds the demon’s place. This is also said to be a real story that we all know from mythological stories that lord Krishna had sixteen thousand wives. Lord Krishna accepted narkasure his last request before he was killed. The demon narkasur request him to let the day of his death should be celebrated as a day of fasting in the country.
After the victory lord Krishna returned to his wisdom very early in the morning of chhoti Diwali and was bathed and massaged by scented oils. While taking early bath with oils is still a Diwali tradition. This story teaches us a lesson that good deeds can defeat evils.
