Value of Dusshera
The festival of Dusshera is celebrated twenty days before Diwali . This is an important festival of Hindus. It is celebrated in the month October. On this day people make models of Ravana, Kumbhkarana and Meghanath and they burn it in the evening. Dusshera is celebrated on the tenth day of Ashwin. The women of the houses make Dusshera with flour. On Dusshera they put water , kumkum, rice, jaggery, flowers, jau, and some money.The people also worship their old ledgers and other necessary books in front of Dusshera. On this day people worship Lord Rama and the book Ramayana. The festival of Dusshera is celebrated from ancent tunes. According to Indian mythology on this day Lord Rama killed Ravana after ten days of battle and win. So this day is celebrated by the people of killing Ravana on the victory by Lord Rama.
There is one another story about Dusshera . Once their was a demon named mahishasur All the people were by is terror Lord Durga frightened. Fought with demon mahishasur for ten days. On this day Lord Durga killed this demon. So this festival is celebrated on this occasion.
There is one more mythological legend about this festival. Once Goddess Parvati asked Shiva why Dusshera festival is celebrated and what is the result of this?God Shiva told Goddess Parvati that on this evening stars when appear on the sky at that time Kaal named Vijay appears on the sky and there is a belief that it fulfills all the desire of the person. Those who want to win over their enemies that ruler or King should move on that time. Lord Rama fought against Ravana on this period. That’s why this day is important.

On the day of Dusshera people worship shammi tree. They had a strong belief that by worshipping this tree their enemies will be finished and their all sins will be destroyed. Goddess Parvati asked Shiva that how and for what reason did this tree absorbed the weapons of great warrior Arjuna God Shiva replied that during exile period after defeating Pandavas in gambling Duryodhana gave Pandavas exile of twelve years and on extra year of exile. During tweleve years of exile Pandavas are free to move to any places they want but in one extra year of exile they should not be identified by anyone. If anyone recognized them, then again they will be given exile of twelve years. During on extra period(Agyaatvaas) . Arjuna put all his (bows and arrows)weapons under this shammi tree and request this tree to hide his weapons during Agyaatvaas.Shyama tree hide the weapons during this period.
During nine days from Dusshera Ramleelas are organized in many places in cities and villages. On Vijayadashmi or Dusshera people floated the idols of Goddess Durga in rivers , ponds, lakes etc. This festival gives us message that we should accept the good things and remove the evil and bad things. Dusshera festival also tells us that we should fight against the bad and evil things.
